Embracing Memorial Day….. Everyday

Blue Fridays.
Very soon, you will see a great many people wearing blue every Friday. The reason? Americans who support our troops used to be called the ‘silent majority.’ We are no longer silent, and are voicing our love for God, country and home in record breaking numbers. We are not organized, boisterous or overbearing.

Many Americans, like you, me and all our friends, simply want to recognize that the vast majority of America supports our troops. Our idea of showing solidarity and support for our troops with dignity and respect starts this Friday — and continues each and every Friday until the troops all come home, sending a deafening message that every red-blooded American who supports our men and women afar, will wear something blue. By word of mouth, press, TV — let’s make the United States on every Friday a sea of blue much like a homecoming football game in the bleachers. If every one of us who loves this country will share this with acquaintances, coworkers, friends, and family, it will not be long before the USA is covered in BLUE and it will let our troops know the once ‘silent’ majority is on their side more than ever. The first thing a soldier says when asked ‘What can we do to make things better for you?’ is: ‘We need your support and your prayers.’ Let’s get the word out and lead with class and dignity, by example, and wear something blue every Friday.

  1. Good Morning America

    • The young man in the picture exemplifies how we all feel about our fallen comrades.
The ones who said yes when asked to defend their Country.
The ones who said yes when told to go into a situation that they felt was futile. And sometimes it was.
The ones who said yes when mounting a helicopter bound for a LZ knowing that they are going to see mangled bodies and have to fight for their lives to get back to relative safety.
The ones that made it out and still suffer the memories of horrendous events that they have witnessed that continue to haunt their dreams.
The ones that paid the ultimate price.
It will be an honor to meet these folks on the other side.
Can you just imagine the stories they will have to tell ?

      God Bless America.

  2. Good Morning Sam, and God Bless you, Blue ever Friday sound awesome will do starting this coming Friday. Blue it is.

  3. Reblogged this on YOU DECIDE and commented:
    Blue every Friday!

  4. I have shared this with my friends…I am so blessed that my father wasn’t killed when shot on Tarawa!!! However, I have the telegram sent to his mother, announcing missing in action…How many have given all, and how many have given most, and how many have just given…for the United States of America…AND FOR WHAT??? A president that only hopes for the nations destruction. God bless all who have given for our freedom. For our children’s freedom..God bless America, and please Father, help us save her, for all who have given so much.

    • What a proud heritage you hold and the Telegram is awesome being that he came home. God Bless you and your family Kathleen

    • Well said Kathleen.
My father was stationed in the Burma jungles during WWII.
His favorite airplane was the P-40 Warhawk flown by the Flying Tigers that he witnessed defending them against the Japanese attacks on their camp in the jungle.
My father was a radio operator, (Morse Code), plus voice.
My avatar depicts a P-40 dressed to the nines.
It is a tribute to my father.

All of the men and women who defend America are to be honored.
Their desire to defend Her against Her enemies should never be forgotten.

      • AFVET…so proud of your family to. Being a disabled veteran myself…I am now, for the first time in my life, ashamed of our government. It’s our fault for trusting in our elected officials…living our lives while they usurped our heritage. Letting them remove God from every aspect of our lives…the destruction of the family. It’s not too late if we start now…but we must start. We need to do more than just type on a computer. We need to get involved. Elect people who believe in the founding principals…we need God back in our lives…our family…our Nation can survive…if we try…if we pray. God help America!!! Amen!!!

        • We Americans have never turned away from a challenge and we are not about to start now.
Chin up, eyes forward, into the fray !

  5. Wonderful blog Sam. Blue fridays is a great idea!

  6. I must say Sam, a few tears welled up when I saw this young man purse his lips when receiving the flag from the military. What more can I say, shoulders back , chin up and be brave on Memorial day for all that serve our country.

  7. Daughter’s decision

My Daughter walked into the family living room last night and said “Dad,cancel my allowance immediately, forget the College tuition, rent my room out, throw all my clothes out of the window; take my TV, IPhone, IPod, and my laptop. Please take any of my jewelry to the Salvation Army or Cash Converters. Then sell my car, take my front door key away from me and throw me out of the house. Then disown me and never talk to me again. And don’t forget to write me out of your will and leave my share to any one that wants it.”

Well, she didn’t put it quite like that. What she actually said was …

“Dad, meet my new boyfriend, Muhammed. We’re going to work together on President Obama’s re-election campaign.

  8. Something I thought I’d share this upcoming Memorial Day –
War historian Paul Fussell died recently. Years ago, I personally gave his essay “Thank God for the Atom Bomb” to Gen. Paul Tibbets at a tribute dinner at the Proud Bird restaurant near LAX for him and the crew of the Enola Gay. [http://crossroads.alexanderpiela.com/files/Fussell_Thank_God_AB.pdf]
A couple of weeks ago, I met the granddaughter of the former owner of the house two doors up from me (Gerald Marsh). He had built a miniature railroad around his property (including 60’ tunnel through the cliff ending in a hand-built rock trestle). He was a WWII vet who served in Graves Registration (picking up body parts and identifying the dead). It looked as if his energy and creativity was also a form of therapy.
Along those lines, I would like to share another essay by Paul Fussell that seems appropriate for this coming Memorial Day. [http://harpers.org/archive/1982/01/0024716]
Have a peaceful and reflective Memorial Day with your family, friends, and loved ones.
    Warmest wishes,

I am tired and sick of war. Its glory is all moonshine.
It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded who cry aloud for blood, for vengeance, for desolation. War is hell.
    ~ Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman
It is well that war is so terrible, otherwise we should grow too fond of it.
    ~ Gen. Robert E. Lee

    • Anyone who has experienced war first hand can appreciate those quotes. I have to ask you Lance, have you ever served in our Military?

Many of us on this Blog have and now it seems we are fighting a war against those who would take away our Freedom of Religion. Hmmm?????????

      • Though I became draft age in ’75 and actually toyed with the idea of enlisting (feeling if military service could ever be considered “safe”, that would not be too bad a time to serve), but knew I would have to take the oath and commitment seriously and did not trust the government to refrain from ordering me to kill people that did not deserve killing.

My friend’s son was with Marines 1/5 for the fall of Baghdad. At his welcome home celebration, I asked him about his experiences in a combat zone. The first words out of his mouth to me were, “We killed people for no reason” and went on to describe some of the things he did as per the ROE as well some of the things he saw. The descriptions were enough to make me a bit queasy, as well as ponder what it might do to the person who actually witnessed them. He’s since been diagnosed with PTSD but for some BS reason is denied disability because of whatever arbitrary % the VA assigns his condition.

Will Munny: It’s a hell of a thing, killing a man. Take away all he’s got and all he’s ever gonna have. ~ Unforgiven

“The willingness with which our young people are likely to serve in any war, no matter how justified, shall be directly proportional to how they perceive the Veterans of earlier wars were treated and appreciated by their nation.” – George Washington

Btw, the second Fussell link should have been this one –

  9. As far as freedom of religion goes, it doesn’t say “IN GOD WE DON’T TRUST” on the money. I’m an atheist and am outraged that the government makes ANY declaration on my behalf in regards to a god-view. Either I am not part of the “WE,” or IGWT is a LIE.

    • This country was founded on the concept of freedom of religion, or lack thereof.
You say that you are outraged by the governments declaration on your behalf in regards to God (view).
What about the folks that disagree with you ?
It is your decision to be part of the WE.
In God We Trust is not a lie, it is one of the precepts the Country was founded upon.
No one will stop you if you want to leave this country.
Perhaps an atheistic country would be more to your liking,…know of any ?

      • Got a Troll attack at Voting American if your inclined to fly the P40 tonight.

      • I am part of the “WE” by default. Our system was predicated on protection from the tyranny of the majority as well. How’s it feel to be American Taliban?

        • I am not “American Taliban.”
To my knowledge there are no religions in this Country that promote the elimination of anybody who disagrees with their philosophy.
You would be considered ‘an infidel’ according to the Taliban.
I don’t consider you an infidel at all.
Believe whatever you want, I promise you that I will not force my religious opinions down your throat under penalty of death if you do not accept them.

          • “If you don’t like it get the hell out” is certainly not very inclusive, even if you choose *not* to execute me. Just admit for the govt to declare IN GOD WE TRUST is a lie. It’s that bloody simple. I am part of the WE, OK? E pluribus unum, right? I am an American citizen *without* a belief in any god(s).

I’d be satisfied if they changed it to “IN REPUBLICAN JESUS WE TRUST” because that at least highlights who’s getting their knickers in a twist over the government’s sanctioning of a belief in God (or would you be OK with IN ALLAH WE TRUST?)

          • Your Banned from this site lancethruster.

You have proven yourself to be nothing more than just another Atheist/Liberal Asshole and we won’t tolerate that here.

  11. ‘Come Up With a More Neutral Term’: MSNBC Panel Debates Using the Word ‘Hero’ To Describe Fallen Soldiers

MSNBC is not known as a network that sympathizes with the wars in Iraq or Afghanistan, but this Memorial Day weekend, rather than put aside their political differences to salute our men and women in uniform, a panel on Chris Hayes’ show instead engaged in a debate over how to refer to our fallen soldiers.

Specifically, the panel debated over using words like “hero” because– in their words– the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan aren’t “worthy” causes.

    Chris Hayes introduces the issue:

“I feel uncomfortable about the word ‘hero’ because it seems to me that it is so rhetorically proximate to justifications for more war. Um, and, I don’t want to obviously desecrate or disrespect memory of anyone that’s fallen, and obviously there are individual circumstances in which there is genuine, tremendous heroism, you know, hail of gunfire, rescuing fellow soldiers, and things like that. But it seems to me that we marshal this word in a way that is problematic. But maybe I’m wrong about that…”
John McWhorter of the New York Daily News continued: “…I would almost rather not say ‘hero’ and come up with a more neutral term…I share your
discomfort with those words because they are argumentational strategies in themselves, often without wanting to be.”

Michelle Goldberg of the Daily Beast, who recently compared Ann Romney to Hitler and Stalin on the same network, added: “There are people who are genuine heroes, but the kind of implication is that death is what makes you a hero, you know as opposed to any kind of affirmative act or moral act…”

After reassuring that there is honor and valor in the military, Goldberg said: “It’s more just that, it’s a way of ennobling sacrifices that have a lot of nobility for the individual, but to say that someone kind of died heroically suggests that they died worthily, or that they died in the pursuit of a worthy endeavor…” [Emphasis added]

  12. That’s a very moving picture.
