I would like to Honor this Wonderful Veteran in every way I can and hope that everyone will re-post his letter in emails and anywhere else you think this man would get the recognition he deserves. Here is a Letter a 95 Year Old Pearl Harbor Survivor wrote to President Obama
Dear President Obama,
My name is Harold Estes, approaching 95 on December 13 of this year. People meeting me for the first time don’t believe my age because I remain wrinkle free and pretty much mentally alert.
I enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1934 and served proudly before, during and after WW II retiring as a Master Chief Bos’n Mate. Now I live in a “rest home” located on the western end of Pearl Harbor , allowing me to keep alive the memories of 23 years of service to my country.
One of the benefits of my age, perhaps the only one, is to speak my mind, blunt and direct even to the head man.
So here goes.
I am amazed, angry and determined not to see my country die before I do, but you seem hell bent not to grant me that wish.
I can’t figure out what country you are the president of.
You fly around the world telling our friends and enemies despicable lies like:
” We’re no longer a Christian nation”
” America is arrogant” – (Your wife even
announced to the world,” America is mean-
spirited. ” Please tell her to try preaching
that nonsense to 23 generations of our
war dead buried all over the globe who
died for no other reason than to free a
whole lot of strangers from tyranny and
hopelessness.)
I’d say shame on the both of you, but I don’t think you like America, nor do I see an ounce of gratefulness in anything you do, for the obvious gifts this country has given you. To be without shame or gratefulness is a dangerous thing for a man sitting in the White House.
After 9/11 you said,” America hasn’t lived up to her ideals.”
Which ones did you mean? Was it the notion of personal liberty that 11,000 farmers and shopkeepers died for to win independence from the British? Or maybe the ideal that no man should be a slave to another man, that 500,000 men died for in the Civil War? I hope you didn’t mean the ideal 470,000 fathers, brothers, husbands, and a lot of fellas I knew personally died for in WWII, because we felt real strongly about not letting any nation push us around, because we stand for freedom.
I don’t think you mean the ideal that says equality is better than discrimination. You know the one that a whole lot of white people understood when they helped to get you elected.
Take a little advice from a very old geezer, young man.
Shape up and start acting like an American. If you don’t, I’ll do what I can to see you get shipped out of that fancy rental on Pennsylvania Avenue . You were elected to lead not to bow, apologize and kiss the hands of murderers and corrupt leaders who still treat their people like slaves.
And just who do you think you are telling the American people not to jump to conclusions and condemn that Muslim major who killed 13 of his fellow soldiers and wounded dozens more. You mean you don’t want us to do what you did when that white cop used force to subdue that black college professor in Massachusetts , who was putting up a fight? You don’t mind offending the police calling them stupid but you don’t want us to offend Muslim fanatics by calling them what they are, terrorists.
One more thing. I realize you never served in the military and never had to defend your country with your life, but you’re the Commander-in-Chief now, son. Do your job. When your battle-hardened field General asks you for 40,000 more troops to complete the mission, give them to him. But if you’re not in this fight to win, then get out. The life of one American soldier is not worth the best political strategy you’re thinking of.
You could be our greatest president because you face the greatest challenge ever presented to any president.
You’re not going to restore American greatness by bringing back our bloated economy. That’s not our greatest threat. Losing the heart and soul of who we are as Americans is our big fight now.
And I sure as hell don’t want to think my president is the enemy in this final battle…

Pearl Harbor Attack Remembered at 70th Anniversary
PEARL HARBOR, Hawaii – The Dec. 7, 1941, bombing of Pearl Harbor and those who lost their lives that day are being remembered Wednesday on the 70th anniversary of the Japanese attack that brought the U.S. into World War II.
About 120 survivors will join Navy Secretary Ray Mabus, military leaders and civilians to observe a moment of silence in Pearl Harbor at 7:55 a.m. Hawaii time — the moment the attack began seven decades ago.
About 3,000 people are expected to attend the event held each year at a site overlooking the sunken USS Arizona and the white memorial that straddles the battleship.

Great letter! I wish more Americans had his spirit! I’m a Marine who has served in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. I know the struggles we have to go through to keep this land free, not fall to the hands of a “leader” like those countries have. Be a proud AMERICAN or get out.

Okay. But you have to agree that, by his actions, he espouses Socialism which is very little better than Communism. Our country was founded on individual responsibility and opportunity. We have strayed far enough from those ideals on our own. We don’t need any help from the man leading our country. You can only move money around so much before the people who are actually working and becoming successful get tired of supporting those who simply want a free-ride. He stirs people up in the most negative ways. He constantly picks on the so-called rich, which according to him includes the small business owners, who only make $250K a year. He stirs up resentment and malcontent in those who have less, towards those who are more successful. Is that how a real leader acts? He calls us lazy and soft. What other president did that? We are the greatest nation on the face of the earth, and he constantly puts us down. How do you explain that? How do you earn the loyalty and respect of your people when you “lead” in such a way? We’re already feeling discouraged because of the stagnant economy. People are losing their jobs and their homes. Then this man just pours salt in the wound, by getting everyone worked up and mad at each other. Pray tell, what does that accomplish?

Can you absolutely PROVE that Bush made up lies about WMD? I would love to see your evidence. I’m guessing that’s just your theory. I’d be very careful about calling someone a liar without evidence. You can interpret these words however you like. The truth is, actions speak louder than words. And his actions show all of the above. He takes more and more of the Christian elements away, and pushes more and more tolerance towards Muslims. He takes away the terrorist references and replaces them with “man caused disasters” and “workplace incidents”. He makes a lot of positive references towards Islam, but disses Christianity at every turn.
He has apologized to other nations for our country on multiple occasions. He bows to other world leaders, and disrespects our servicemen all the time. Ok, Yes congress writes the laws for out nation but the president is the one that has to sign them into effect. There is a process called checks and balances which no longer exists. This country was founded on the principles that the country was to be run by the people for the people. In the matter of the way our country is run; it has become about power and the almighty dollar. If you sit down and think about it, when was the last time that your congressmen did something to help YOU….. I am willing to bet that nothing comes to mind. Anymore your constitutional rights are becoming less and less. To fix the problems with America then you have to start with the people that are causing the problem i.e. the people on the HILL. Maybe you should consider voting for someone that is going to stand up and help make a change instead of going along with the person that has been there the longest. Sit down and think about what you hav done, who you have voted for, and maybe what can be done to fix the issue. If you have taken a college level American Politics class you would know these are two contradictory things. The President’s role, originally, was to not have a lot a power and who cannot make a lot of change.
In the first quote you argue that you want someone who is going to produce change, but then that would go against our slow system of checks and balances.

I agree with Mr. Harold Estes. This gentleman fought for our country and seen his friends and fellow officers die in combat for this country. Yet we don’t take his advice and listen to his thoughts and feelings on what he sees going on here. Here is a real Patriot. He is 92 yrs old and still thinking about our country and our future as a nation. We may not be a ‘nation founded on a Christian religion’ but we are a ‘nation under God’. So whether you’re Christian, Catholic, Lutheran, Protestant or whatever, if you’re an AMERICAN and you love this country you’re religion should not matter as long as you believe that ALL Americans what ever their religion, background, ethnicity, beliefs or sexual orientation are all equal and we strive for the same goal for EVERY HUMAN BEING on this planet it shouldn’t matter that we’re not a ‘Christian Nation’. We are a nation of PEOPLE who love THIS country. Like my dad says ‘If it’s not a beat you can dance to, get off the dance floor.’ I agree with Mr. Estes on his feeling about Mr. Obama. It seems he has weakened in the efforts with the middle east. these people have no intention with peace. The people who have fled there may have, in intentions of good to come here for the ‘American Dream’ of equality and freedom. Some have come for destruction and chaos and these are the people that we need to defend against not bow to their leader and say that we have misunderstood.
All our presidents need to serve in the military to be eligible for presidency. If you must be born in this country you must want to serve for it. People that come here to live and have our freedom want to serve and fight for it, our president should also.
I just want to thank Mr. Harold Estes for his service at Pearl Harbor. I salute his bravery for fighting all those years ago and also for his fight now at 92. Also for his Patriotism, it is honorable and very inspiring. I salute you Sir.

Im going to start by saying I did not vote for Obama This last election. But guarentee I will be voting for obama this next election like it or not your problem not mine. No Im not sold on Obama but what I see right now the replicans are currently destroying the nation and doing a darn good job of it, including the tea party especially them. Maybe Mr Estes would feel a little different if he only knew that the attack on Pearl Harbor was known of by our government Before it happened. Yet the attack was allowed to occur so that our isolationist country having been attacked would then enter the war. President Obama has done as much as one could ask as our Republican congress has sat upon their hands to thwart him at every turn all in the name of politics. I am a Naval veteran who served this country and I am also proud of President Obama. Mr. Estes sounded like a very articulate man and was probably a great boon to our country, but folks, please VERIFY things before you go off half cocked and angry about stuff that isn’t true. It took me ten minutes to find the real speeches and to see Mr. Estes’ claims weren’t real. I get the feeling he heard these things second hand and didn’t know they were pulled out of context.

I think it is time people start realizing that our government system was NOT made to be run by one person. I am not proud of where America is right now either. We have a republican heavy legislative branch that is doing their BEST to ruin what work is being done to make this country better. They refuse to increase taxes to the people who make the most money in this country. Money that can help bring more programs for veterans and children and reduce our debt. Our president has been trying to push legislation to get our country back in a good economic shape, but the people you are wanting to put into office are some of the ones doing their best to make the current president we have look like he is not doing anything.
Our republican congressmen and women, who supported the war in Iraq now is telling Obama to pull every troop is. If you think about it critically, doing that is not the most intelligent thing to after what Bush had done. We went and destroyed a country’s government system, yes it was one that was heinous and filled with dishonesty and crime against their own people, but to leave without a rebuild government is irresponsible.
Please remember that our country runs on checks and balances. We have 3 branches of government, the Legislative, the Executive, and the Judicial. The Legislative basically creates laws, decides how money is spent, and creates treaties with others. The Executive branch, signs or vetoes new laws and enforces federal law, commands our Armed forces and deals with international powers. The Judicial reviews these new laws and deals how they work with our constitution,
Please keep that in mind as you throw hate words towards each party of government whether republican or democrat. Our president is the face of our government, but not the ultimate ruler of this land. He is not acting like a dictator, he is acting like a man who is not happy with the people he has to work with. People who have not put the interest of the American people first, but the interest of the ones with money, their own party.
And please let us review the wars that this man had mentioned. He is right that the people who first started this country fought to make the US independent from the British rule. Then we get to the civil war. A war that was fought because half the country at the time did not believe that every person was created equal, which then led to the segregation of Black and Whites, and the murders of thousands of Blacks in this country in the south because our federal government said it’s up to the states to take care of their own. It was another 100 years before there was federal reform on this. Then there was WWII. The war that America held out of for as long as it could. I respect all of our fallen soldiers. I was in love with one, until he passed earlier this year in Iraq. Our soldiers fought hard to reclaim this country’s pride. We did not join this war because we felt so strongly about what was going on around us, we joined because the Japanese bombed us. This wasn’t a “we need to protect those outside of this country from atrocities because it’s not right” war, this was a “I can’t believe they bombed us, not we gotta show them who is boss” war for America. While Europe and Asian countries were fighting for their freedoms from true dictators, The US wanted to stay out of it.
Now there is a a fight within our government to let those who are gay and trans not serve openly. Do yo remember when the Blacks were not allowed to serve along side their white counterparts? Or when women were not allowed to serve? Our Military leaders are telling our government representatives that there is no reason for DADT, many of our congress men and women still don’t listen and are still doing their best to create a world that is “separate, but equal”. A government that condemns those that are different.
Please seek to be educated and stop thinking that you know all. At 28, I have yet a lot to learn, but I do have a great understanding of what this passage means:
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
Right now, we are not created equal, POC are still not provided the same respects and liberties that white men are given, our homosexual and transexual brothers and sisters are still not being offered the same Rights to pursue happiness. Those of us in the working class, white or blue collar, which is the 80% of this country, not the 99%, are forced to live lesser than what our earning provide to keep the top 10% unchecked and taxes un-paid, and the bottom 10% taken care of with our tax dollars. This work is not done by our President, but rather those in power in both the house and the senate. If you really want to look at who is to blame, it is all of us. It is the American people that voted these congress people into power. We cannot complain if we are not knowledgeable. Stop believing propaganda, and learn to think for yourself. Open a book and research your country’s history. Both sides spew propaganda everyday. Neither one is completely trust worthy, but it is up to you, to sift through the garbage and think critically at what is being shared.
Remember that your president does not hold ultimate power over our country. Spread the blame of what is going on here between all three branches. That is the beauty of American government, we have a government of checks and balances, but we have a population of people who don’t understand that. Please, please… PLEASE educate, don’t open one book on the subject and believe it as truth, open several to sift through the garbage and learn.

What did you not understand I mean this is the study you keep referencing have you actually read it? I posted an Exact quote from the study that was done and the DRD4 gene theory requires two different inputs independent of each other, there is no link to be found, not without an exhaustive study and No One has done one covering All Aspects. It scientifically shows that a specific gene does Not predispose one to being liberal or conservative. The study itself Totally refutes your hypothesis, by the way I can tell you either can’t or do not read the comments unless it is with tunnel vision. I am a registered Independent who cares about this country and Reads (not watching tv to have them tell me what to think) and am generally concerned that lobbyists have taken control of the United States. I am not the only one who has seen this trend as many economists from numerous continents have seen and reported on the same thing. You really should consider stepping away from the keyboard and doing some reading, slowly and with an open mind not one that has been indoctrinated, as your most certainly appears to be, there is hope for you given time and patience. Maybe the DRD4 gene is activated by injection given by doctors in liberal states just after birth…That’s the kind of conspiacy theory I’m getting used to from far right conservatives….I don’t know how some people make these crazy connections…If there is a gene combination that predisposes one to liberal thought, then there is a gene combination the predisposes people to conservative thought as well. Not knowing it yet doesn’t mean it isn’t there. Thats how genes work, and only in combination with environmental factors. The presence or absence (activation or deactivation) of a gene or any combination of genes does not form a persons personality or predetermine what that persons opinions will be as an adult.
As I have said previously, hearing (or in this case reading) this stuff makes me want to vote for Obama just because the people who hate him the most make the least amount of sense. Though I expect that when I get into the booth I will probably vote against him. Researchers have determined that genetics could matter when it comes to some adults’ political leanings.
According to scientists at UC San Diego and Harvard University, “ideology is affected not just by social factors, but also by a dopamine receptor gene called DRD4.” That and how many friends you had during high school.
The study was led by UCSD’s James Fowler and focused on 2,000 subjects from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health. Scientists matched the subjects’ genetic information with “maps” of their social networks. According to researchers, they determined that people “with a specific variant of the DRD4 gene were more likely to be liberal as adults.” However, the, subjects were only more likely to have leanings to the left if they were also socially active during adolescence.
“It is the crucial interaction of two factors — the genetic predisposition and the environmental condition of having many friends in adolescence — that is associated with being more liberal,” according to the study.

I admire and am truly grateful for the service of all our vets, especially those from WW11 where my dad served in the invasion of Normandy. However, If you are going to quote the president at least be accurate and not change the meaning of what he said by omitting words to suit your views. With all due respect, the vet who wrote that letter should put on his hearing aid and glasses the next time the president makes a speech. After all, he is the President and commander in chief.
I thought it a pretty darned good letter coming from a guy who is 95 YEARS OLD. Who is to say that his letter did not pertain to much more than just what Obama had to say in his speech? Only a liberal would nit-pic a 95 year old Hero and Veteran of WWll. Really.

Because in reading back over the comments here, I find not place where that is done, except for the fact that you accused people of doing it!
Now as to Mr. Obama’s policies, would you say that they are aimed at protecting the people of this country? If not, why? Do they think that other countries need security but that we do not? What about the principles that this country was founded upon? Should Mr. Obama and all who work for him, live by and support those policies? If not, why not? Does Mr. Obama respect the Christian foundations that this country was established upon? If so, where do you find this information? Does Mr. Obama believe that he has a responsibility to uphold his oath of office? If so, why does he continually tell us that he has the right to ignore laws that he doesn’ t agree with? Or that he will go around Congress if they do not give him what he wants. Does Congress have the right and the responsibility to make laws? Do they have to do what the President tells them or are they an independent branch with the ability to write laws that he may decide to veto or not?
You seem to have the idea that as President, Mr. Obama sits at the top and everyone else is below him. That is not the way the Constitution was written, there are three co-equal branches of government. That is what makes us a republic. Mr. Obama has made a practice of putting himself in the position of either a king or a dictator, since he is neither one but continues to put himself there, that is what a socialist or communist country suffers from. Mr. Obama has state publically that he supports these types of governments, from Castro, to Chavez and others. Was he wrong in his statements, or was he telling the truth? The principles of a socialist country are taking from some and giving to others in order to make things equal, except the only real equality that you wind up with, is being equally poor, while someone in power decides who deserves the money that they took from you. Now I am not calling Mr. Obama any names, I am pointing out the very policies that he is using and those that he has stated that he approves of.

Yet voters want someone in power who makes America go left, pander to dictators, apologize for every thing since the end of the ice age, change the demographics of this country, etc.. Obama didn’t hide who he was. A socialist muppet raised by a white mother with a fetish for Muslim alcoholics. Returning to America was abused till started getting high and into black power to fit in. He remembers fasting on Ramadan more than opening up presents on Christmas morning. Heard it personally and yeah Im very skepital on somethings obama has done. however he has been used as a crutch very severly by the republicans again I have always been republican and someday i hope to vote republican again but not whats in there now. Personally I have alway been for the man and not the party. And believe it or not Im not a huge union fan either. But think of why the union came to be in the first place. Kids working 16 hours a day 7 days a week with little pay. poor work enviroment. My father inlaw would not have a job if was was not for the union because he was a vietnam vet. Boils down to the wealthy and the majority are republicans trying to get richer at the expense of others. And no Im not saying all rich are bad or all replicans are bad but neither are all demacrats. I will say this anybody that makes 34 million a year to write books and talk on tv and state things that may or may not happen but refuses to tip a waitress and complains about a firefighter making 30 to 50 thousand a year to be away from his family a 3rd of his life and may or may not come home is a complete loser he is indepedent and started the tea party and I use to like him and for a small time was for the tea party till they got carried away. And it was his own words that turned me again him. I seriously doubt many of us on here are Rich if any. And think about who owns the oil wells with tax cuts the majority are republicans including Bush. The gas stations sure dont see much of the money.

I served in the army back in 72. When I told my Dad I was enlisting in the
army, I just as well should have said ” Im a coward, and Im heading to Canada” as it meant the same thing to him. Dad was on Iwo Jima when he was 17, and I guess I broke his heart by not following in his footsteps.
The Men of that generation saw things that they never talked about much, they just kept it to themselves. My Dad drank alot and used to love to get into fights even when he was in his 60′s. He was a Boxer in the MC, and He was one big guy !!! Now I have two sons, one in the Air Force and one in the Marines, so the pictures up on my wall have many military people on it, who love this Country very much, and are willing to give the last ounce of devotion to defend it.
I thank Mr Estes for his service, and he wrote the truth. I am sad at his passing, but he is with the people he loves now, May God Bless Him.

I don’t understand how you guys can ignore the fact that Chet Parker proved all of the “quotes” Estes use to be out of context. How can you still back up Estes when he was blatantly taking President Obama’s words out of context. Reading his entire speeches proves that he doesn’t want to take Christianity out of America, that he doesn’t believe we’re arrogant, ect. Sure, he may be defending Muslim views, but he is not taking Christian values away in any way. This is America, which, by definition, means we are accepting of other views and religions. It’s un-American of anyone to not accept other religions. If you feel like what he is doing, by merely recognizing the fact there are other religions, is oppressing Christianity, then imagine what Muslims and Budhists feel when you really are oppressing their religions. Yes, we were attacked by Muslims, but they were extremists. The Muslims that are living in America as citizens, are simply quietly living their lives, not threatening us. If they were a threat, the Government would know about it, they do enough background checks. I really hope you actually take into account what I said, and what Chet Parker pointed out, and not simply block out our points. We have taken your points into consideration, but have unfortunately food them to be based on out-of- context exaggerations. I respect Estes and thank him for serving our country, however, he is not helping our country by lying.

As for the Muslim Major killing 13 Soldiers, I can’t find any source that says Obama said not to condemn him. However, how do you feel about this quote from Obama on the situation?

So much for removing Christianity, right? He asked us to pray.
And finally, how do you feel about the fact that Obama did, in fact send 30,000 troops in response to the General requesting 40,000. Sure, he didn’t send the exact amount, but this was because the decision to send more troops was greatly thought over by, not only Obama, but a number of officials. Many meetings occurred to decide what the best approach to sending more troops was. In fact, he listened to many military officials while making his decision, which is better than taking the word of one general.

Of course I do not believe that every conservative is close-minded. However, I can’t help think it when he can not even acknowledge that the quotes in this article were taken out of context. Just as not all conservatives are close- minded, not all liberals are either. I’m sorry that you had to grow up in such an environment. I was fortunate enough to grow up with my dad being conservative and my mom being liberal. I’ve always been able to see both sides and choose for myself which I would support.

These ideas are twisted in context and giving false sentiments to Obama’s word. When he said we weren’t living up to our ideals he was referring to the disregard of civil liberties of it’s citizens and it’s own international laws where war behavior was concerned. Also this country was founded by people who were being religiously persecuted in their own country and religious freedom is one of our greatest founding attributes. Without personal freedom what are we fighting so hard to protect!

Okay… First off I love my country and have so much respect for the men and women who serve with honor. That being said, I feel it’s a bit wacky to idolize this dear old man just because he served. Just because you are in the military does not make you some type of god. Plenty of enlisted men and women have done horrible things (guantanomo bay any one?). This man obviously dislikes Obama and used out of context arguments.
