Otis P. Driftwood’s Naval Career
In 1975, after 5 1/2 year in the Army Reserve, I decided to go on active duty. The Army wanted to drop me from E-4 down to E-2. I
wasn’t having any of that, so I walked out of that recruiter’s office and straight across the hall into the Navy recruiter’soffice. He said I would have to drop to E-3 and after he explained how the Navy Petty Officer system worked I said OK. 3 weeks later I
was at Great Lakes Naval Station in Waukegan, IL. It was December and the first time this Florida boy had EVER been involved with snow in any size, shape, or form. While there I attended a 3-week OSVet (Other Service Veteran) class.

Good Morning Sami. Thanks for posting this – it seems like my Naval Career is becoming quite popular. I had no idea a simple post would do this. It looks a lot different laid out like it is than when all I had was a few paragraphs and some attachments in an email to The Last refuge admin.
You have a wonderful story Otis and one to be proud of. I would encourage you to consider starting a blog. It is not as hard as you might thing. Start by opening one on wordpress and play around with it for awhile before you publish anything. You will be amazed at how simple it is once you set up the blog itself. C’mon, give it a try and put your talents to use.

I saw that Sami. Sorry about late response. The people at The Last Refuge want me to do more. I’m thinking about doing something about what a typical day at sea aboard a carrier is like. At least the flight deck aspect of it. Probably not before this weekend though.
